THE STORY OF MODERN ISRAEL

BY ABBA EBAN.

PUBLISHED BY WEIDENFELD & NICOLSON, 1972.

FROM THE FOREWORD

Ihave asked myself the familiar question; "If a reader were limited to one book about Israel's story since May 1948, what would i like them to know?"

Not only to know, but to feel.

The past decades have their taste and atmosphere, as well as their recorded facts. the facts will survive in records and documents, but no encyclopaedia can convey the sharp fluctuations of mood between anguish and relief. It is here that our contemporary witness is needed, and we should give it while we can. In 1973 the overwhelming majority of Israeli citizens cannot have a living memory of the day on which their independence was proclaimed; the perils that attended its early weeks; the combined burden and glory of the mass-immigration in the first crowded years; the pressures and scarcities of the early 1950s; or the tormenting rhythm of frontier violence before 1956. Thereafter, we come to a period that lives more vividly in the readers consciousness. I have therefore given special weight and space to the earlier period.
